(September 5 – 10:50 ET) – Ontario’s finance minister Ernie Eves says that the Ontario Taxpayer Dividend, promised in the 2000 Ontario Budget, will be in the mail starting October 6.
Eligible Ontario taxpayers will begin receiving rebate cheques for up to $200 from the Ontario government. Everyone who paid Ontario income tax last year qualifies for the dividend. Those who paid more than $200 in tax are entitled to $200, while those who paid less than $200 will get a cheque for the amount of tax they paid. The minimum rebate is $25. The majority of Ontario’s taxpayers will receive the full $200. Finance says the Taxpayer Dividend will give $1 billion back to the taxpayers of Ontario.
The rebate cheques will include a Notice to Taxpayers, showing each individual taxpayer how the province’s tax cuts have affected their taxes.
The Ontario Taxpayer Dividend will be administered by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. The CCRA requests changes of address be forwarded by September 15 to avoid any delays in the delivery of the cheques.
“Tax cuts have paid real dividends in terms of a strong economy and jobs in Ontario. They have allowed us to eliminate the deficit and provide for two balanced budgets in a row. The Ontario Taxpayer Dividend is just one more tax cut that puts money directly back in people’s pockets,” Eves says.
