Former chairman of the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) Jack Geller will be laid to rest today.

Geller served as vice chair of the commission in the early 1990s, and was acting chair of the OSC between the terms of Ed Waitzer and David Brown. During that time, he was the driving force behind the creation of the self-regulatory organization (SRO) for mutual fund dealers, the Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada (MFDA). Among other things, he was also heavily involved with the OSC’s move to self funding and reforms to facilitate the introduction of alternative trading systems in Canada. Prior to joining the OSC, Geller had a long career in private practice at Campbell, Godfrey & Lewtas.

He had four children, two of whom are also heavily involved in the financial industry —Lawrence Ian Geller, president of L.I. Geller Insurance Agencies Ltd. in Campbellville, Ont.; and Harold Geller, leader in Financial Loss Recovery Group of Ottawa’s McBride Bond Christian LLP, and member of the OSC’s Investor Advisory Panel (IAP).

According to a notice, Geller died at home in Toronto on Jan. 7, and is to be interred today. The funeral service will be held at Toronto’s Holy Blossom Temple where he was as president and later became honourary life president.
