Former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Andrew Furey is joining National Bank of Canada as vice-chair.

The Montreal-based bank says Furey will assume the post which will see him work with its commercial banking and capital markets teams effective March 16.

Furey, an orthopedic surgeon, was elected as premier of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2020 and served until 2025.

During this time as premier, Furey reached a new draft agreement with Quebec that would see Hydro‑Québec pay more for Churchill Falls power.

National Bank chief executive Laurent Ferreira says Furey will be instrumental in growing the bank’s presence and deepening its client relationships across the country.

National Bank of Canada is the smallest of Canada’s six systemically important banks.
