Barclays Capital has continued its strategic expansion in Canada with the establishment of two new senior positions, the company announced on Wednesday.

Ian Montgomery has been appointed chief operating officer of Canada and John Kennedy has been appointed chief compliance officer of Canada. Both executives will support the execution of the firm’s strategy in Canada, according to Barclays Capital, the investment banking division of Barclays PLC.

“The appointments of Ian and John underscore the continued importance of our Canadian franchise as a strategic priority for the firm,” said Sandra Godard, managing director of Barclays Canada Limited. “We expect to make further announcements of our growing client offering in the coming months as we continue the expansion of Barclays Capital in Canada.”

Currently, Barclays Capital has Canadian offices in Toronto and Calgary, providing investment products and services to corporate, government and institutional clients. The firm also operates a growing commodities trading business in the region, and in time, the firm expects to offer a full-service sales, trading and research platform.

As COO, Montgomery will be responsible for coordinating front office activities in Canada, ensuring a single point of contact for all matters relating to Canada and the firm’s Canadian legal entities. Montgomery will be based in New York and will report to Justin Bull, chief operating officer of global markets.

Montgomery joined the firm in 2003 and assumes this new responsibility in addition to his current role as COO for principal credit at Barclays Capital. Montgomery received his MBA from INSEAD, his MA from the London School of Economics and his BA from Trinity College at the University of Toronto.

Kennedy will based in Toronto, and will be responsible for coordinating compliance oversight of all matters relating to the firm’s Canadian businesses. He will report to Alex Guest, head of global futures, BARX and eCommerce Compliance.

Kennedy has 20 years of legal and compliance experience in the Canadian financial services industry. Prior to joining Barclays Capital, he was director of compliance for Fidelity Investments in Toronto and before that, chief compliance officer for Altamira Financial Services. Kennedy received his LLB from Queens University and his BComm from Concordia University.
