Toronto stocks climbed steadily Friday afternoon. The TSE 300 closed up 52.39 points to end the week at 7,315.30.

Overall, 11 of the TSE’s 14 sub-indices were higher, but safe-haven gold stocks suffered, slipping 1.89%.

Market momentum was positive, as 553 issues advanced and 492 declined, on volume of 189.4 million shares.

Celestica jumped $2.06 to $64.80, helping to drive the tech-heavy industrials sub-index to a 1.61% gain.

Research In Motion Ltd. rose 6.7% to $34.97, while Nortel Networks added 38¢ to $12.69.

Franco-Nevada Mining took a hit for gold stocks dropping $1.15 to $22.90, while Barrick Gold slipped 35¢ to $23.10.

Transport stocks took advantage of lower oil prices, surging 1.28% on gains by Canadian Pacific Railway up $1.26 to $30.76..

Airline stocks were up, too. Air Canada gained 28¢ to $4.48.

Energy stocks rebounded a bit Friday. The oil and gas sub-index gained 1.27%.

Alberta Energy led the way, gaining $1.45 to $56.75.

Canada’s venture capital exchange put in a good performance Friday. The CDNX Index closed up 25.42 at 3,051.58. Trading was active on a volume of 30.1 million shares, with 201 advances and 188 declines.

In New York, stocks were flat. Positive news on American progress in Afghanistan was tempered by news of a security breach at Atlanta’s international airport.

The Dow Jones industrial average shed 5.40 points at 9,866.99, while the Nasdaq composite index dipped 1.99 points to 1,898.58. The S&P 500 added 3.59 points to 1,138.65.
