Two notable figures in the finance industry have been named to the Order of Canada.

Patricia O’Malley and Mark Bonham were among 80 new appointees announced Wednesday. The list of appointees includes artists, scientists, academics, journalists, athletes and Supreme Court justices, from the likes of music journalist Nardwaur the Human Serviette to seven-time Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse.

“The Order of Canada fosters a sense of pride and cohesion in our country,” Gov. Gen. Mary Simon said in a statement. “Every appointment celebrates not only the talent, expertise and dedication of individuals, but also the countless lives they have touched through their work, vision and contributions.”

O’Malley, a chartered professional accountant who hails from Stratford, Ont., was recognized for redefining financial reporting and standard setting. Namely, she received a nod for her leadership in developing and implementing the International Financial Reporting Standards and for being one of the first women to serve in senior roles traditionally held by men in the accounting profession.

Toronto-based Bonham, president of investment management firm Bonham & Co Inc. and executive director of non-profit charity The Veritas Foundation, was named a member of the order for his philanthropy, which has supported the 2SLGBTQI+ community and educational sectors. He was also recognized for his contributions as a board member of several organizations.

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields. Three different levels of membership — companion, officer and member — honour people whose accomplishments vary in degree and scope.
