Gaelen Morphet is joining Toronto-based Sentry Investments Inc. in the role of chief investment officer (CIO), taking over from Sandy McIntyre, who will remain with the firm as an executive and vice chairman of the board, the company announced on Monday.

Morphet joins Sentry from Kingston, Ont.-based Empire Life Investments Inc., at which she was senior vice president and CIO. She brings 32 years of investment management experience, which include time spent at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Bank of Nova Scotia, both based in Toronto.

“Gaelen’s appointment represents both a passing of the torch and an opportunity for continuity,” says Sean Driscoll, Sentry’s CEO, in a statement. “We have built a strong reputation around the Sentry ‘house style’ and our ability to apply it consistently across our fund family. Gaelen also has demonstrated a continuity of approach across mandates and shares a commitment to our disciplined investment process.”

This is the second time in a little more than a year that Sentry has welcomed a new CIO. McIntyre, who had originally held the role between 2008 and 2012, returned to the job after the abrupt departure of then CIO Dennis Mitchell in July 2015. McIntyre will stay with the firm to provide guidance and input on business and investment strategy, according Sentry’s announcement.

“From an investment management perspective, Gaelen shares our values around buying great businesses as opposed to speculating on stocks,” says McIntyre in the statement. “She is also committed to our steadfast discipline regarding valuation, capital allocation and downside protection.”
