Craig Alexander will become the first chief economist at Deloitte Canada, Toronto-based Deloitte LLP announced on Tuesday.

Alexander was most recently senior vice president and chief economist at Ottawa-based Conference Board of Canada. Prior, he was chief economist at Toronto-Dominion Bank and vice president of economic analysis at C.D. Howe Institute, both based in Toronto.

In his new role, Alexander will oversee and further develop Deloitte’s macroeconomic research and forecasting capability to develop research on the economic trends affecting Canadian business and the future of Canada.

He begins the new role in mid-July.

“Craig is a highly sought after thought leader on issues affecting the future prosperity of Canada,” says Frank Vetesse, managing partner and chief executive of Deloitte Canada, in a statement.

“Together we share a belief that Canada can stand head and shoulders above the rest as the best place in the world to live and work — but there are challenges ahead. Craig’s expertise will enhance our firm’s analytical capabilities and help inform our clients as they consider the courageous actions needed to propel our country forward.”

Under Alexander’s leadership, the firm will produce economic insights that will help clients plan for the future, respond to macro forces affecting their business, and understand how changes in economic policy will influence them.

“I spent the bulk of my career in banking using economics to support all divisions of the bank and its clients,” says Alexander, in a statement. “I look forward to similarly using economics to support all Deloitte services and clients.”
