Industry moves: BMO Private Wealth adds advisors, talent

Plus, CIBC promotes Mark Mulroney, and appointments at Scotiabank, National Bank and more

Each week, we summarize notable moves across the financial industry.

Mark Mulroney has been appointed head, office of the CEO at CIBC, in addition to his current role as global vice-chair. The expanded position was first reported by The Globe and Mail. Mulroney joined the bank in late 2025 from Scotiabank, where he served in various investment banking and other roles, and as vice-chair, global banking and markets. He has more than 25 years of experience in the banking industry, including with National Bank of Canada, RBC Capital Markets and Goldman Sachs, and is the son of former prime minister Brian Mulroney.

Brad Brazier and Philip Jeremy Dupuis have joined BMO Private Wealth as senior portfolio managers, leaving TD Wealth Private Investment Advice after close to 19 years. Brazier started his career as an advisor with CIBC in 1996. He and Dupuis bring four team members with them.

Christopher Bean has joined BMO Private Wealth as head of Canadian alternatives, leaving Ninepoint Partners LP after more than two years as head of corporate development. Bean previously ran his own consultancy serving the asset management and wealth management space and spent more than 15 years with RBC Capital Markets as managing director of global investment banking. He started his career as a corporate lawyer with Stikeman Elliott LLP in the 1990s. Also joining BMO Private Wealth is Chris Au‑Yeung. He’s been named director, managed solutions business development, leaving Aviso Wealth, where he served as vice-president, product management, NEI investments for eight years.

Kent Pickett has joined Designed Wealth Management as an investment advisor and financial planner after four years with Manulife Securities Inc. Pickett brings more than 25 years of industry experience in wealth management and accounting.

Naveen Balakrishnan has joined Scotiabank as vice-president, technology transformation and organizational enablement, a newly created role. Balakrishnan previously spent close to a decade at TD, most recently serving as managing director, strategy and business planning. He also served in senior strategy, technology and risk intelligence roles with BMO Capital Markets, and is an adjunct lecturer with Harvard University.

Sean Tascatan has been named chief investment and growth officer at Nest Wealth Asset Management. He was a lead portfolio manager with Starlight Capital for more than three years, with previous experience at BMO Private Wealth, Caldwell Investment Management Ltd. and Sentry Investments.

Zohair Ahmed has been appointed as chief operating officer of University of Toronto Asset Management (UTAM), succeeding Lisa Becker, who has retired after a decade in the role and 16 years with the organization. Ahmed joined UTAM in 2018 as director of operations, bringing previous experience with Timelo Investment Management Inc., the Carlyle Group and the Citco Group of Companies.

Julie Giraldi has been appointed chief human resources officer at the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA). She previously held the same role at CAAT Pension Plan, where she spent seven years, and also held senior roles at OMERS.

Dave Patriarche has resigned from FSRA’s Technical Advisory Committee on Insurer Oversight of Managing General Agencies, a role he held since December 2024. In a LinkedIn post, the group insurance specialist and principal of Mainstay Insurance Brokerage Inc., said while he was initially frustrated by the experience, he felt his “interactions with FSRA did contribute to positive changes” in how the regulator’s new MGA licensing framework will be administered.
