Toronto-based Mackenzie Financial Corp. has hired Alex Bellefleur as chief economist and strategist of the multi-asset strategies team, effective Sept. 17, the company announced Wednesday.

“Alex Bellefleur is an experienced economist with a strong ability to link economic indicators to the financial markets,” says Alain Bergeron, senior vice president and head of the multi-asset strategies team. “Our multi-asset investors will benefit from his in-depth analysis, research, and interpretation of global macroeconomic data, trends and themes.”

Prior to this appointment, Bellefleur served in progressively senior roles at Pavilion Global Markets Ltd. in Montreal, most recently as head of global macro strategy and research. He also worked as an associate analyst at Moody’s Investors Service in Toronto.

“With wide-ranging expertise in analyzing global macroeconomic data, Alex will be a key player in our multi-asset strategies team and in the solutions we offer investors,” said Tony Elavia, Mackenzie Investments chief investment officer, in a statement.

Mackenzie has also hired Blair Ireland as portfolio manager on the multi-asset strategies team. Ireland has worked as a portfolio manager and researcher at firms such as CPP Investment Board and Citadel. He has a strong background in systematic portfolio management and global macroeconomics.

“I am delighted to work with Blair again,” says Bergeron, in a statement. “This re-unifies four investment professionals who have worked well together in the past, and also adds to our tremendous experience with pension style investing.”
