Securities markets in the United States will be closed Tuesday as part of a national day of mourning to mark the funeral of former U.S. president Gerald Ford.

Nasdaq Stock Market was the first to announce the decision to close, and other markets quickly followed suit.

Separately, the New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the CBOE Futures Exchange also said they will close on January 2 to honor Ford.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve Board said it will be closed Tuesday for the day of mourning. The minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting of Dec. 12, originally scheduled for release on Tuesday, will instead be released at 14:00. ET Wednesday, Jan. 3.

The only other time the NYSE has been closed four straight days was in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
