Toronto stocks moved lower Thursday, as weakness in the materials sector weighing down the broader market.

The S&P/TSX composite index dropped 45.78 points, or 0.36%, to 12,737.21.

Six of the 10 TSX main sub-groups were down, with the materials index off 1.55%.

Alcan fell 60¢, or 1.09%, to $54.35.

The gold sub-index fell 0.95%.

The February contract finished down $3.20 at $621.10 an ounce.

Goldcorp fell 59¢, or 1.85%, to $31.25.

The energy sector moved up 0.21%. Crude-oil futures fell $1.06, or 1.7%, to close at US$62.66 a barrel.

EnCana Corp. lost 16¢, or 0.29%, to $54.99.

After the bell, Research In Motion Ltd. eported preliminary quarterly results that exceeded expectations.

The company said the number of people using BlackBerry wireless devices globally increased by more than 10% in the last three months, to more than 7 million.

For the third quarter ended Dec. 2, RIM said profit jumped 47% and sales rose 49% from a year earlier. The company posted a profit of $176 million, or 93¢ a share, on sales of $835.1 million. That compares with a profit of $120.1 million, or 61¢ a share, on sales of $560.6 million in the year-earlier period.

The Canadian dollar fell 0.51 of a cent to US86.57¢.

The S&P/TSX Venture Exchange index gave up 15.75, or 0.55%, to 2,830.53.

In New York, markets moved lower on weaker than expected regional manufacturing numbers.

The Dow Jones Industrial Index fell 42.62, or 0.34%, to 12,421.25, the Nasdaq gave up 11.76, or 0.48%, to 2.415.85, and the S&P 500 lost 5.23, or 0.37%, to 1,418.30.
