(February 9 – 16:15 ET) – Finance Minister Paul Martin announced today that he will present the 2000 federal budget in the House of Commons at approximately 16:00 ET on Monday, February 28, 2000.
Martin says some of the budget measures will take effect on budget day. But some measures may be effective from midnight Sunday, February 27, the day preceding the budget presentation.
The practice of proposing measures effective on budget day follows the procedure adopted in prior years, says a Finance Department press release. It ensures uniform application of budget measures to transactions entered into on that day, says Finance. Further, says the department, “This announcement provides appropriate notice so that interested parties
can take this into account in planning their financial affairs.”
