?4cs Canada said the index of leading economic indicators rose by 0.3% cent in June, the same as in May.
Economists had expected a rise of 0.1%.
“Domestic demand continued to strengthen, boosted by an upturn in housing in June,” the agency said Wednesday. “Six of the 10 components advanced, one less than in May as manufacturing lost some of its recent strength.”
After turning up in May for the first time in almost a year, the housing index jumped 2.6% in June, its largest gain in a year. Condominium construction led the advance in May: in fact, it was the only area of starts which was ahead of last year’s pace.
