(November 18 – 10:30 ET) – Despite the booming economy Canadians don’t feel any richer, according to a recent CIBC Financial Health Poll. Sixty-five per cent say they are just treading water.

Most Canadians say that their after-tax, after-inflation income hasn’t grown. And they aren’t optimistic about their outlook for 2000. Only 35% expect better things in the new year – down from 47% who expected improvements this year.

Quebecers and B.C. residents are most cynical about their economic prospects, while Ontarians and Albertans are most optimistic. Tax relief is at the top of the agenda for many Canadians, yet they still want to see the government spending on education and healthcare too.

The poll was conducted by Compas Inc. with 1,005 Canadians aged 18 and over from across the country; September 1 to 13.
