The House of Commons passed a confidence motion on Thursday afternoon that effectively cancels a Liberal-sponsored RESP tax-break bill already before the Senate.

Members of Parliament voted 124-87 in favour of a ways-and-means motion to implement the federal budget that included provisions to cancel the bill, which promised tax breaks though the RESP plan.

The bill, introduced by Liberal Dan McTeague, would allow parents to contribute up to $5,000 a year for each child to an RESP and deduct the amount from their income taxes.
