The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) has approved the registration of Smead Capital Management (Canada) Ltd., a subsidiary of the Phoenix-based investment management firm founded in 2007.

Smead Canada is now registered as a portfolio manager in Ontario and Alberta, and as an investment fund manager in Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Canada is home to exactly the kind of long-term investors we want to serve,” said Cole Smead, CEO and portfolio manager of Smead Capital Management in a media release. “We intend to be here for the long haul.”

The firm plans to serve family offices, institutional investors and retail investors via mutual fund platforms.

In an interview, Smead said the firm will also introduce ETFs if there’s sufficient demand. “If there are ETF investors that want that kind of product, we’ll be happy to do it,” he said.

Smead Capital managed US$5.3 billion as of May 31, 2026, according to the release. Founder Bill Smead, who serves as the company’s chief investment officer, is a value manager whose philosophy aligns with that of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger.

“Firms like ours don’t normally come to Canada,” Cole Smead said. “We think there’s an originality and a freshness to someone like us wanting to launch products into the market.”
