The British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) has filled a couple of high-level executive roles from within.

The BCSC announced on Tuesday that associate general counsel Douglas Muir has been named its new director of enforcement while Peter Brady, who has been head of enforcement since February, will become executive director of the BCSC. Both moves take effect on Sept. 7.

Muir joined the BCSC in 2004, spending seven years as litigation counsel in its enforcement division, before becoming associate general counsel in the office of the chair. Before that, he was in private practice.

“Doug’s deep understanding of securities and administrative law, and broad regulatory experience make him uniquely qualified to bring strategic leadership to our critical enforcement efforts,” said Brenda Leong, chairwoman and CEO of the BCSC, in a statement.

Before taking over enforcement earlier this year, Brady was director of corporate finance at the BCSC. He rejoined the commission in 2012 after a stint as general counsel at Qtrade Financial Group and has practised securities, entertainment and corporate law at a public company and in private practice. Now, as executive director, he is head of staff and will be chief administrative officer of the commission.

“Peter brings a wealth of capital markets and regulatory experience to his new role,” adds Leong. “He will provide continued strong leadership to the commission and I look forward to working in partnership with him, building on our cohesive approach to protecting investors — through robust compliance programs, innovative investor education, strong enforcement and cost effective regulation.”
