Contributing to post-secondary tuition builds confidence: poll

Toronto-based Bridgehouse Asset Managers is encouraging financial advisors to spread the word about its annual scholarship program for post-secondary students as it launches the fifth edition of the program.

“We urge all students to apply and hope that parents, teachers, financial advisors and others who have contact with eligible Canadian youth will also encourage their participation,” says Carol Lynde, president and chief operating officer at Bridgehouse, in a statement released Monday.

“We want to provide as many students as possible with the opportunity to gain useful information about their investing personalities so that they will be well prepared for the investment decisions they will need to make in the future,” she adds.

Bridgehouse, the trade name of Brandes Investment Partners and Co., provides 10 scholarships of $2,000 each to Canadian students between the ages of 18 and 22 who can demonstrate knowledge of their investing personality and risk tolerance. The students must complete an online investor behaviour quiz that is based on the “know your client” form and write a 400 to 500 word essay in which they explain what they learned about their investing personality.

“It’s not enough to be financially literate,” Lynde says, “young people must understand their own investing behaviour and risk tolerances in order to create a successful relationship with a financial advisor and manage their investments throughout their earning years.”

The submission deadline is June 15 and the winners will be announced on Aug. 15.
Further details and rules for the program can be found on the firm’s website.

The program has awarded $60,000 in scholarships and received more than 13,000 submissions since it began in 2012.
